Last term in class we learnt about Anzac Day and why this day is special.

We read stories in our School Journals about Anzac Day and how they felt during the war.

We then created chain poems to help remember Anzac Day and what it is like during war. When you create a chain poem the last word on the line is the first word on the next line. Here are some of our poems:

In war you can get killed
Killed means die
Die is what you do in war
War is a bad thing

By Rian

In the war people have really tough lives
Lives they have to survive really gooey mud
Mud sometimes has water in
In the hole to hide when the soldiers come
come after other brave soldiers

By Isabelle

The army was stuck in the mud
Mud was hard
Hard to come back from the war
War is hard

By Pharrell

Brave soldiers going to war
War is scary at the least
Least soldiers fight
Fight the soldiers do
Do the soldiers die

By Kate

We also made wreaths to help remember ANZAC Day here is a photo of what our wall display looks like of our poems with our wreaths:

Bike and Scooter Day

Last week at Reremoana School we had a focus on the importance of road safety especially around bikes and scooters.

In Room 18 we read a big book about bikes

Here are some of the things we learnt from it

- You always need to wear a helmet
- Make sure you can get on and off your bike
- Your toes need to touch the ground when standing on the bike
- You need to be able to start without wobbling
- You need to know how to turn your bike
- You need to know how to turn your bike

Students from the Student Council designed four courses for the Tui Team to ride on and practise their skills.

Bike Day Recounts by Room 18:

"Yay" on Friday we had bike day. We did it at school. We had four courses. We had a scooter and bike. We went around the circle following the chalk and we had to go in the gaps. We did this with the Tui Team so we can be safe on the road.

At school we had a bike day with the Tui Team. There were 4 bike activities to do with the bikes and scooters. We had to go around a green circle with a bean bag on our head. We had to balance it on our head.
By Lucan

"Wee! I love my bike". I could ride my bike all day. Today is awesome because it's bike day. Everyone is happy. We had to balance a bean bag on our head it was funny as a clown. New we had to go around the cones. I felt happy.

We really enjoyed our Bike and Scooter Day thank you Student Council for making the course.

Field of Dreams Swimming

We have been enjoying going to our swimming lesson at Sykes Road Pools. Today we had a lesson on safety.

First we learnt how to rescue someone who doesn't know how to swim in a pool. We DO NOT jump in the pool to help them as they may panic and pull us under the water. If they are close to the side of the pool we can use a pool noodle to help them. You need to lay down on the side of the pool and hold the noodle out to them. They then grab onto the noodle and you pull them back to the side of the pool and help them out.

If they are further away from the side of the pool you DO NOT get in the pool to help them either. You look around for something to throw to them so they can float and kick themselves to the side of the pool. At swimming we threw flutter boards. At home you may have a board or a noodle you could throw. When they get to the side of the pool you help them to get out.

Next we put on life jackets and learnt some new skills with the life jackets. When you are on a boat and you are going to go into the water you need to sit on the side of the boat with you bottom near the edge. You then link arms with the person next to you. Do not let go of them!

Then you start at one end and start to fall backwards into the water and stay floating on your back

When everyone is in the water all connected (we broke apart) you lay on your back and kick away from the boat.

Then you need to get into a huddle to keep yourself safe from floating away and to make it easier for a rescue team to find you.

When you are in the huddle you need to lay back on your back and face up to the sky. The instructors splashed water on our faces but we were not allowed to let go of our group or we would get lost. You have to stay in your huddle till you are rescued to keep safe

Technology: Rube Goldberg Machines

For technology last term we made Rube Goldberg Machines. A Rube Goldberg Machine is a complicated way to do a simple task. We learnt about incline planes, pulleys, and levers. Watch our video and see some of the Rube Goldberg Machines we made in class and at home.
